HINGE TYPES: What to use where
Butt Hinge
The Most common type of hinge. They are recessed into the door and door jamb and are comprised of 2 matching leaves, with a knuckle in the middle held together by a pin. The pin is available in loose of fixed versions:
Butt Hinges: Loose Pin vs Fixed Pin
Butt Hinges come in both Loose Pin and Fixed Pin versions. The pin is the metal rod which holds both leaves together. In a fixed pin hinge, this pin is not removable, however with loose pin hinges the pin can be removed. This often allows to easer installation as the door can be lifted into position once the hinges are attached, and the door can also be removed easily without unscrewing the hinge, eg. for painting etc.
For security purposes, Loose pin hinges should only be used on internal doors, with fixed pin hinges used on external doors.
A Flush hinge (Also called Hirline Hinge) does not require a recess to be chiseled out in the door jamb as each leaf nestles into each other. Therefore they are quicker to install and can also be used on metal jambs where recessing the hinges not possible.
Lift off Hinges are made up of 2 leaves which, when installed, allow the door to be lifted up and removed. These are often required in 'fully contained sanitary compartments' as per various building regulations. National Construction Code requirements (2015) Clause 3.8.3.3. Your builder or architect can generally advise whether these are required in your situation.
Sizes
Hinges also come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. The size required depends on the thickness and weight of your door, however as a around guide, larger hinges (100 x 75mm) are used with ~40mm thick entrance or internal doors, where standard 35mm internal doors are normally fitted with Hinges around 85mm x 60mm in size.
